BMW iX3 Unveiled as the First Neue Klasse Model with 805 km Range and 400 kW Charging
BMW has unveiled the new iX3, marking the beginning of the brand’s Neue Klasse era. The fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle introduces a completely new combination of design, electric powertrain technology, digital features, and vehicle electronics that will influence a wide range of future BMW models.
The new iX3 is more than a conventional model update. BMW describes it as the first production vehicle to bring Neue Klasse technologies to customers, with the innovations expected to spread across around 40 new models and model updates through 2027.
New Design Language
The BMW iX3 introduces a fresh design direction for the brand, focusing on cleaner surfaces, sharper details, and a more distinctive appearance. The front features vertically positioned kidney elements combined with a horizontal lighting signature, creating a new interpretation of BMW’s traditional four-eyed face.
Flush-fitting door handles, large glass areas, and precise body lines contribute to a cleaner overall appearance. BMW has also developed coordinated exterior and interior lighting sequences that create an animated welcome experience.
BMW Panoramic iDrive
Inside, the iX3 introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive with the new BMW Operating System X. The system is built around four major elements: BMW Panoramic Vision, a central free-form display, a multifunction steering wheel with discreet controls, and a 3D Head-Up Display.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has also been enhanced, with BMW gradually introducing large language model technology to make voice interactions more natural.
Drivers can personalise their experience through BMW ID and new My Modes, while BMW Maps provides intelligent navigation and charging-focused route planning. BMW Digital Key Plus is also offered as standard, allowing compatible smartphones and smartwatches to function as vehicle keys.
Four High-Performance Computers
A completely redesigned electrical and software architecture forms the foundation of the iX3. Instead of relying on a conventional network of electronic control units, the vehicle uses a zonal architecture supported by four high-performance computers, which BMW calls “superbrains.”
BMW says the new computers offer around 20 times the processing performance of the previous generation. The architecture is designed to support over-the-air software updates, future functions, advanced AI features, and improved connectivity with the My BMW App.
New Heart of Joy Technology
The iX3 also introduces BMW’s Heart of Joy control system, which manages key driving functions through software developed by BMW. The system works alongside BMW Dynamic Performance Control to coordinate the vehicle’s driving characteristics.
One of its notable features is the new Soft Stop function. BMW says regenerative braking can handle around 98 percent of everyday braking situations, helping create smoother deceleration while recovering energy.
The new automated driving architecture also provides significantly more computing power than the previous system. Optional Motorway & City Assistant technology expands the vehicle’s driver-assistance capabilities, while the iX3 becomes the first BMW to feature the company’s new symbiotic braking technology.
Sixth-Generation BMW eDrive
Underneath the new iX3 is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology. The system has been designed around an 800V electrical architecture and uses new cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells.
BMW says energy density has increased by approximately 20 percent. The battery uses a cell-to-pack construction to improve packaging efficiency, while the battery itself contributes to the vehicle’s structure through a pack-to-open-body approach.
The BMW Energy Master acts as the central control unit for the high-voltage battery, while the electric drive system combines two motors. The xDrive version also introduces an asynchronous motor on the front axle.
Up to 805 km of Range
Range is one of the biggest improvements with the new BMW iX3. The iX3 50 xDrive is claimed to achieve up to 805 km of WLTP range on a single charge.
The efficiency improvements are significant as well, with BMW targeting up to 20 percent lower energy consumption compared with the previous-generation iX3.
400 kW Fast Charging
The new iX3 supports charging at up to 400 kW, allowing BMW to add as much as 372 km of range in approximately 10 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
The vehicle also introduces bidirectional charging capabilities, opening the door to Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid applications.
BMW has also developed a new charging experience with an intelligent charging flap and its Multifunction Charger. Plug & Charge Multi Contract can support up to ten charging contracts, allowing customers to access compatible charging services without repeatedly authenticating.
Sustainability Focus
BMW has placed additional emphasis on sustainability throughout the iX3’s development. The company says supply-chain CO₂e emissions were reduced by around 35 percent during development through the use of secondary materials, renewable energy, and production improvements.
The new iX3 50 xDrive uses approximately one-third secondary raw materials. BMW has also applied its “Design for Circularity” approach, focusing on material selection, recyclability, and easier vehicle disassembly.
The iX3 will be produced at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, which is designed to operate without fossil fuels during normal production conditions.
Beginning of the Neue Klasse Era
With its new design language, advanced digital architecture, 800V electrical system, 400 kW charging capability, and claimed range of up to 805 km, the BMW iX3 represents a major technological step for BMW.
As the first production model of the Neue Klasse generation, the iX3 is set to establish the technological and design foundation for a new wave of BMW vehicles arriving over the coming years.
