BMW iX3 Unveiled as the First Neue Klasse Model with 800+ km Range and 400 kW Charging
BMW has officially unveiled the new iX3, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the brand with its first production model based on the Neue Klasse platform. Revealed at the BMW Group’s world premiere in Munich, the electric Sports Activity Vehicle brings together a completely new design, advanced electric technology, and a significantly upgraded digital experience.
BMW describes the Neue Klasse as one of its most important development programs in decades, with the technologies introduced by the iX3 expected to influence around 40 new and updated models by 2027.
A New Design Direction for BMW
The new iX3 introduces a completely revised design language that will gradually become a defining feature of future BMW models. Its styling is cleaner and more restrained, while maintaining the strong proportions associated with BMW’s SAV models.
The front-end features vertically oriented kidney elements combined with a new horizontal lighting signature. BMW has reduced the use of traditional chrome detailing and instead uses lighting as a major visual element.
Clean body surfaces, strong shoulders, large glass areas, and flush-fitting door handles give the iX3 a more streamlined appearance. The rear receives a new lighting signature designed to visually emphasize the vehicle’s width.
BMW Panoramic iDrive Debuts
One of the biggest changes inside the iX3 is the introduction of BMW Panoramic iDrive, which will become a major part of the next generation of BMW vehicles.
The system combines BMW Panoramic Vision, a free-form central display, a redesigned multifunction steering wheel, and a 3D Head-Up Display. Panoramic Vision projects information across the lower section of the windscreen, allowing the driver to view key information while maintaining attention on the road.
The new BMW Operating System X also brings greater personalization. Through My Modes, drivers can customize elements such as display content, lighting, sound, and selected driving characteristics.
BMW has also redesigned the interior around a cleaner dashboard layout, creating a more spacious and modern environment.
Four Supercomputers Power the iX3
The iX3 introduces a completely new electrical and software architecture built around four high-performance central computers. BMW refers to these systems as “superbrains,” with processing capabilities claimed to be up to 20 times greater than those of conventional systems.
One of the most important systems is the Heart of Joy, which manages functions related to the drivetrain and driving dynamics. It combines BMW’s long-standing expertise in vehicle dynamics with software-based control to deliver more precise responses.
The architecture is also designed for future over-the-air updates and new digital functions.
More Than 800 km of Range
BMW has focused heavily on improving the iX3’s electric range. The new model offers more than 800 km of WLTP range, representing a significant improvement over the outgoing generation.
The sixth-generation BMW eDrive system uses an 800V electrical architecture and new battery technology to improve efficiency and energy density.
BMW says the new battery cells offer around 20 percent higher energy density, while the revised battery construction reduces weight and material usage.
400 kW Charging
Fast charging is another major highlight. The new iX3 supports charging at up to 400 kW, allowing the vehicle to gain more than 370 km of additional range in approximately 10 minutes under suitable conditions.
The new platform also supports bidirectional charging technology, potentially allowing the vehicle to supply energy for external devices, homes, or compatible energy networks.
BMW has further developed its charging ecosystem with new wallbox solutions, an intelligent charging interface, and Plug & Charge Multi Contract functionality.
New Driving and Assistance Technology
The iX3 introduces BMW’s latest generation of driver assistance technology. The vehicle uses a dedicated high-performance computer for automated driving functions, providing substantially greater processing power than the previous system.
BMW Symbiotic Drive brings together driver and vehicle assistance technologies with the aim of making driving support feel more natural and integrated. The iX3 will also offer advanced motorway and city assistance functions depending on specification and market.
Sustainability at the Core
BMW has also focused on reducing the environmental impact of the new model throughout its lifecycle.
The iX3 incorporates approximately one-third secondary raw materials, while BMW says CO₂e emissions within the supply chain were reduced by around 35 percent during development.
The company has also adopted a “Design for Circularity” approach, focusing on material selection, recycled content, resource efficiency, and easier disassembly.
Production of the new iX3 will begin at BMW’s new Debrecen plant in Hungary.
The Beginning of a Much Larger Neue Klasse Line-Up
The BMW iX3 is only the first production vehicle in the Neue Klasse family. BMW has confirmed that the next major model will be the new all-electric BMW i3, which will become the first electric variant of the next-generation 3 Series.
BMW plans to introduce around 40 new or updated models by 2027, with Neue Klasse technologies spreading across different segments and powertrain types.
With its new design language, 800V architecture, 400 kW charging, more than 800 km of range, advanced computing systems, and BMW Panoramic iDrive, the new iX3 represents a significant transformation for BMW.
The iX3 is therefore not simply a new electric SUV. It is the starting point for a new generation of BMW vehicles.
